Chapter 12 Journal

I was a bit disappointed about the end of the novel due to the fact that the author spent every detail to describe Ralph's hiding from the savages and then all of a sudden the boys get rescued. I thought that Golding should have at least included in the end if the Jack, Roger and the other savaged boys ever captured or tortured Ralph.
I think that Ralph cried when at the end of the novel when they got rescued because he felt the relief. It's that feeling when you were little and you got lost in a big place with a lot of people like Disney Land, but you wanted to stay strong to find your parents and then when you find them you just burst into tears. I thought Ralph crying after they were found and rescued was a similar situation to my example because Ralph was the lost kid who wanted to stay strong and find rescue or "his parents" and when he was found he let a happy cry out.
I would actually recommend this book to a friend specifically my age because I would not want my younger siblings to read this book and act like one of the savages.

Ch. 11 Question Review

1. Ralph's group decided to go to Jack's campsite to retrieve Piggy's glasses and try to make them want to keep the fire going to be rescued.

2. The twins saw how Ralph can be when he wants something done. For example, before all of this situation happened Ralph was a calm, collective leader now he is determined and wants to get his point through.

3. The boys are bound to fail at getting Piggy's glasses and getting the other boys to maintain a signal fire is because the savages out number Ralph's group. Also, Jack is a very stubborn kid and will do what ever pleases him.

4. Roger pushes the rock off the cliff to break the conch.

5. The destruction of the conch symbolically significant because now that the conch is gone there is no more civilization.

6. The boys want a chief to lead them and so that they feel secure. The chief leads them and tells them what to do.

7. A) What made you want to turn against Ralph?
B) Why didn't you want Ralph to keep the signal fire going to be rescued? Don't you want to be rescued?

8. It has been hard living in this island, we barely have food, we don't have a signal fire because of Jack's group. Also, Jack's group is ruining everything by not allowing us to create the fire again to be rescued. I don't understand why he does not want to be rescued. Why is he being a savage and why are the other boys following him.
We decided to take back Piggy's glasses and convince the other boys to keep the fire on to find rescue. Sadly in this process Piggy has passed away due to the fact that Roger pushed a rock off the cliff and hit Piggy and broke the conch. Also, Samneric got captured and were tied up together by the savages.

LOTF Question Review Ch. 10

1. Ralph had told Piggy about last night, "that was murder" (Golding156). I feel like Ralph is ashamed to talk about what happened to Simon last night beacuase he had paused when he was talking to Samneric, he had said, "you got lost after the..." (Golding158). Piggy had conclude that, "it was an accident" (Golding 157). I felt like Piggy wanted to just forget about it and just to never discuss about it. Samneric claimed that they were, "just been in the forest-- to get wood for fire--" and that they, "got lost last night" (Golding158). Samneric acted very surprised when they saw Ralph, as if he too was suppose to be gone, but when they saw him they acted very normal as if nothing had happened last night.

2. The differences between Ralph's and Jack's feelings about Simon's death was that Ralph had some sense of humanity, that Ralph felt bad. On the other hand Jack just went on his merry way and went on as if nothing had happened. Also, that Ralph had felt it was murder. Jack did not have a care in the world, he also became the head chief of the savages and told the other boys that Simon was the beast.

3. Jack is now described as "The chief was sitting there, naked to the waist, his face blocked out in white and red" (Golding 160). He was angry and wanted to beat up on someone, so they beat up on Wilfred.

4. Jack: *Invades Ralph's camp with Roger*
Roger! Get the conch from Piggy now!
Roger: Yes, Chief.
*Attacks Piggy for the conch*
Piggy: No! Get away you savage!
*Gets an asthma attack*
Roger: *Runs away with the conch* I've got it Chief!
Jack: Let's go!
Ralph: Samneric get the conch back!!
Sam: Eric you go get the conch back!
Eric: Okay and you go chase after Jack!

Editorial: Still wrong Ebola Rx

1.  What does Betsy McCaughey identify as a problem in her commentary?
Beyond more training and more protective gear for hospital staff, the CDC is also encouraging states to designate certain hospitals for Ebola preparation.
2.  What solutions does she offer?
A safer strategy would be to expand capacity at the nation’s four bio-containment hospitals, which have treated Ebola patients successfully without the virus spreading to a single health-care worker.
3.  How does infection expert Sean Kaufman view the CDC’s guidelines for protective gear in treating Ebola patients?
Sean Kaufman, an infection expert at the bio-containment facility that successfully treated Dr. Kent Brantly and Nancy Writebol (both infected in Africa) and is now treating Vinson, called the guideline “absolutely irresponsible and dead wrong.”
4.  What point did Rep. Michael Burgess make about CDC head Thomas Frieden?
At a House committee hearing last Thursday, Rep. Michael Burgess (R-Texas) held up a photo of CDC chief Frieden in Africa wearing a protective suit that covered him head to toe. Burgess compared it to the flimsy guideline that the CDC had issued for nurses and doctors here.
5.  Ms. McCaughey concludes her commentary by recommending: “The best Ebola strategy is to protect our local hospitals, health-care workers and patients by relying on the nation’s bio-containment facilities. That’s what they were built for.”
a) Do you agree with her recommendation?
Yes, I do agree.
b) Ask a parent to read this commentary and answer this question.
My dad does agree, but also suggests that they also help other facilities and not just our local facilities.

Summary Homework: Pit Bull Discrimination Is Never OK -- Especially For A Superhero Therapy Dog

Aladdin is a rescued pit bull and is now a volunteer therapy dog for hospitals, schools, libraries, etc. In April 2013, he arrived at an animal shelter in New Jersey. He was skin and bones with broken legs, a broken tail and several bruises. "He loves dressing up. To him, that's a sign that he's going to work," says his owner, Michele Schaffer-Stevens, who has been caring for Aladdin for about a year and a half now. Michele was called in to look at Aladdin. She took him home to her three children and her three pit bulls. It took Aladdin time to trust and be comfortable around Michele and her children. Obviously Aladdin has been through a history of getting beaten and abuse.

Michele Schaffer-Stevens recently encountered a disturbing situation at the Virtua due to the breed of the dog they didn't want to have it as a therapy dog. This led to other therapeutic dog owners to refuse to volunteer at the Virtua. For example, "Judy Hutnik, said in an email to other therapy dog owners -- shared with HuffPost -- that her German shepherd Desi will no longer visit the hospital because 'even though Desi and I love volunteering at Virtua, I have decided that doing what is right is more important than all the hard work we have gone through to be a part of Visiting Paws. If loving dogs like Aladdin are not given a fair chance at becoming therapy dogs at Virtua because of their BREED, then Desi and I wish to remove ourselves from the program.'" Another dog owner decided to stop volunteering at the Virtua, "Sometimes you just have to take a stand for what is right. And I have and will continue to share my decision with everyone I know in the therapy dog and rescue community as we cannot allow this to continue." Dogs should not be hated or dislike due to its breed.

My Definition of Knowledge

What does knowledge mean? Knowledge can mean a lot of things and can come from many things or from people. I believe knowledge means something you have learned from where ever that will make a difference in you or for others in a good or bad way. It can come from school, the teachers and other students, it can also some from people outside of school. For example, from the internet, any social media, church, if you go to church, or your parents most likely.

Opinion Editorial

Abortion:
I believe that abortion is not the answer due to many reasons. Also, because I am Catholic and I am pro life. One reason why I think abortion is bad is because for myself being Catholic, there are other ways of getting rid of a child that does not include killing a child. For example, if you are a young woman and not ready to take care of another human being, you may give it up for adoption. There is for sure someone out there that cannot conceive a child and wants children. Another reason why I think abortion is not the answer is because it is technically breaking the man slaughter law. Abortion could fall into the man slaughter law if people would see that baby is any other person that is shot or stabbed. Yes, the baby is not fully grown yet and that it is still a cell and not a human being, but we all were cells at a point. Also, that cell would someday grow into a beautiful human being, and that is if you let it live.  Some may say that they have the right to have an abortion, but are you really letting that soon to be a human being have the right to live? Third reason why I think abortion is not the right answer is because for women that have had abortion may cause them later on to not conceive child. Also, if that woman that had abortion would to have a child later on, that child may possibly have a birth defect. Some may say, "But what if they were rapped or forced to have sex?" I would not know how that would feel, but I know that once you see that precious child you would instantly fall in love with your child regardless. If not you can always give it up for adoption. As you can see there are other ways of solving your problem when it comes to not wanting to have a child.
